The fight against Covid-19 around the world is currently in a new chapter. The advancement of vaccination and the threat of new variants bring new challenges to the global community – and the same intensive technology and data analysis used to treat patients, studying pathogens, and developing vaccines are essential to combat disinformation and monitor the development of variants among other uses.
However, new and old issues in intellectual property rules bring direct or indirect impacts for the use of such technologies and the success of their application – from the availability of data for scientific purposes, data analysis, IA systems training, acquisition and Accessibility of vaccines, until the use of IA in Facts Check Projects to prevent false news advancement related to pandemic.
Thus, this table aims to highlight some of these challenges. Professor Allan Rocha (UFRRJ, UFRJ, Nurep, Ibdautral) will open the table with a presentation on the current voltages between copyright and access to culture and scientific data in the light of the coronavirus crisis.

  • The researcher Miguel Alvarenga (UFRJ, Norrep, Ibdautral) will discuss the use of data mining and texts for scientific and journalistic research and the impact of PI on its application; followed by
  • Professor Luca Schirru (Ibdautoral, Nurep, AUWCL) and his work on how copyrights affect the use of machinery learning systems; and by
  • Professor Patricia Porto (INPI, UFRJ-Nurep), which will deal with compulsory licensing in patent law and access to vaccines. Finally,
  • Marina Pita (Intervoids) will complete the table addressing recent legal proposals in PI and their impacts on science and journalistic activities.
